To order coffee in Thai, combine a drink name with its temperature and quantity: ขอลาเต้เย็นหนึ่งแก้ว, “An iced latte, please.” Then add a preference such as หวานน้อย, “less sweet”, and listen for the barista's confirmation.

The sentence is a useful pattern because you can change one part at a time. This lesson uses approximate pronunciation hints without a complete tone system. Practise the phrases with a reliable Thai-speaking model so that the written hints remain a reminder of the sound.

Start with the drink on the menu

กาแฟ — kaafae means coffee. A café may use that general word for a house preparation, while an espresso-based menu lists particular drinks. Pointing to the item helps establish which recipe you mean.

Menu choiceThaiApproximate sound
Americanoอเมริกาโน่amerika noo
Latteลาเต้laa te
Coffeeกาแฟkaafae
Hotร้อนron
Iced or coldเย็นyen
Blendedปั่นpan

The words ร้อน, เย็น and ปั่น describe different preparations. An iced drink and a blended one are not interchangeable. The exact ingredients also depend on the café: a general กาแฟเย็น order may include milk and sweeteners.

Build the request around one cup

Use this pattern:

ขอ + drink + temperature + quantity + แก้ว

In ขอลาเต้เย็นหนึ่งแก้ว, the pieces are:

  • ขอ — kho: a request for something.
  • ลาเต้ — laa te: latte.
  • เย็น — yen: iced.
  • หนึ่ง — nueng: one.
  • แก้ว — kaeo: the classifier for a cup or glass here.

Finish with ครับ or ค่ะ if that matches your usual polite speech. For two cups, replace หนึ่ง with สอง: ขอลาเต้เย็นสองแก้ว.

If the two drinks differ, order them separately first. It is easier to confirm one iced latte and one hot americano than to give several modifications before the listener knows which cup they belong to.

State sweetness as a separate detail

หวานน้อย — waan noi asks for less sweetness. ไม่หวาน — mai waan means “not sweet”, while ไม่ใส่น้ำตาล — mai sai namtaan asks for no added sugar.

Those requests can produce different results. A drink may contain sweetened condensed milk, syrup or a prepared base even when no extra granulated sugar is added. If you need a specific ingredient excluded, name it and check the preparation.

Some shops offer percentage choices. Those percentages belong to the shop's recipe system; they are not a universal measure of the sugar in every café's drink.

Listen for the choice in the question

A barista may ask ร้อนหรือเย็น, “Hot or iced?” You can answer with the relevant option: เย็นครับ or เย็นค่ะ.

หวานปกติไหม asks whether the usual sweetness is suitable. If you prefer less, answer หวานน้อยครับ or หวานน้อยค่ะ. You do not need to reconstruct the entire order each time.

For takeaway, กลับบ้าน — klap baan is a familiar expression. Listen for ทานที่นี่หรือกลับบ้าน, “For here or to take away?” In this setting, the phrase identifies the serving arrangement, not a question about your home address.

Read a complete café exchange

The customer below uses ค่ะ for statements and replies; the barista uses ครับ.

Customer: ขอลาเต้เย็นหนึ่งแก้วค่ะ
An iced latte, please.

Barista: หวานปกติไหมครับ
Usual sweetness?

Customer: หวานน้อยค่ะ
Less sweet, please.

Barista: ทานที่นี่หรือกลับบ้านครับ
For here or takeaway?

Customer: กลับบ้านค่ะ ขอบคุณค่ะ
Takeaway. Thank you.

The written exchange is a practice example, so the exact wording may differ at the café you visit. Notice how each reply answers only the current question.

Check milk and the total when needed

ไม่ใส่นม — mai sai nom asks for no milk. For a plant-based alternative, use the specific option the café lists and confirm whether it can be substituted in your chosen drink.

An allergy requires more than a preference about milk in the recipe. Explain the specific ingredient and ask about shared equipment. The food-ordering guide covers that distinction in more detail.

Finally, practise recognising the price using the numbers lesson. Ask a partner to change one detail in your order before naming a total. Catching the wrong temperature or quantity is a useful way to test whether you understood the confirmation.

Practise your actual order

Write the order you would use tomorrow. Say it once with the notes visible, then cover them. Change only the quantity on the next attempt, and only the temperature after that.

When those variations feel familiar, have someone ask the follow-up questions in a different order. Your goal is to respond to the question you hear, rather than continue reciting the dialogue.

Common questions

How do I ask for an iced latte in Thai?

ขอลาเต้เย็นหนึ่งแก้ว means an iced latte, please. Add ครับ or ค่ะ as appropriate. ลาเต้ names the drink, เย็น means iced or cold, and หนึ่งแก้ว specifies one cup.

What is the difference between หวานน้อย and ไม่ใส่น้ำตาล?

หวานน้อย asks for less sweetness. ไม่ใส่น้ำตาล asks for no added sugar. A drink may still contain sweetened milk, syrup or a premixed ingredient, so clarify the recipe when that matters.

How do I order two coffees rather than one?

Use สองแก้ว for two cups in place of หนึ่งแก้ว. For example, ขอลาเต้เย็นสองแก้ว requests two iced lattes. State any different preferences for each cup separately.
